We’re a month into 2025, and let’s be real—how’s that resolution list looking? Still going strong? Or did it conveniently disappear under a pile of “I’ll start on Monday” moments?
Look, I’m not here to judge. I’ve been there, making some ambitious, ultra-specific SMART goals, only to realize I had zero connection to them beyond the fact that they sounded good at the time. So let me tell you something that might just change how you approach goal-setting forever:
Your goals should be a reflection of who you are and who you want to become—not some arbitrary checklist of things you think you should do.
The Problem With Resolutions (and “Empty Goals”)
Every year, people set goals like, “I want to lose 20 pounds” or “I’m going to make six figures.” But… why?
If your only reason is “because it sounds good” or “everyone else is doing it,” that’s an empty goal. It has no foundation. No real energy behind it. No you behind it.
Let’s say your goal is to lose weight. Okay, but why? Because you want to be healthier? Cool, but why does that matter to you? Maybe you want to have more energy to run around with your kids, or you want to feel strong and confident when you step into a room. THAT is your why. THAT is what’s going to keep you going.
Just wanting something isn’t enough. You have to understand yourself, your energy, and your deeper motivation. Otherwise, you’re just chasing numbers on a scale, a paycheck, or a random milestone with no real connection to your life.
Goals Should Evolve As You Do
Another thing—why do we act like our goals have to be set in stone for the entire year? You are not a static being. You’re constantly learning, shifting, and evolving. So why would you commit to a rigid goal that doesn’t allow for growth?
Your goals should be like a GPS system: you have a North Star (your big vision), but the route to get there? It should shift as you do. Life happens. Priorities change. The plan should be flexible enough to change with you.

So, How Do You Actually Set Goals That Work?
Start With Self-Understanding – Where are you right now? Be brutally honest. What’s working? What’s not?
Get Clear on Your North Star – What’s the bigger vision for your life? Where do you ultimately want to go?
Build the Stairs, One by One – Instead of making a giant leap, create smaller, achievable goals that lead you to your vision. Each one is a stair step.
Celebrate Every Win – Hitting smaller goals gives you confidence and motivation to keep going.
Adjust As Needed – Your goals should grow as you do. Don’t be afraid to pivot.
Forget the pressure of setting New Year’s resolutions that fizzle out by February. Instead, set goals that actually matter to you—ones that reflect where you are, where you’re going, and the energy you want to bring into 2025.
Start with understanding you, and everything else will fall into place.
